LIVE: Great American Eclipse: Get Ready for 8th April 2024’s Total Solar Eclipse!

Weather TV Channel / A total solar eclipse will take place at the Moon’s ascending node on Monday, April 8, 2024, visible across North America and dubbed the Great North American Eclipse by some media. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter is larger than the Sun’s, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs only in a narrow path across Earth’s surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide.

Occurring only one day after perigee (perigee on Sunday, April 7, 2024), the Moon’s apparent diameter will be 5.5% larger than average. With a magnitude of 1.0566, its longest duration of totality will be of 4 minutes and 28.13 seconds near the Mexican town of Nazas, Durango, (about 4 mi (6 km) north), and the nearby city of Torreón, Coahuila. This eclipse will be the first total solar eclipse to be visible in the provinces of Canada since February 26, 1979, the first in Mexico since July 11, 1991, and the first in the United States since August 21, 2017. It will be the only total solar eclipse in the 21st century where totality will be visible in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. It will also be the last total solar eclipse visible in the contiguous United States until August 23, 2044. The final solar eclipse of the year will occur six months later, on October 2, 2024.

2024 Total Solar Eclipse: Through the Eyes of NASA:

Watch live with us as a total solar eclipse moves across North America on April 8, 2024, traveling through Mexico, across the United States from Texas to Maine, and out across Canada’s Atlantic coast. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. From 1 to 4 p.m. EDT (1700 to 2000 UTC) on April 8, we’ll share conversations with experts and provide telescope views of the eclipse from several sites along the eclipse path. Throughout the broadcast, send us your questions in the chat using #askNASA for a chance to have them answered live.

2024 Total Solar Eclipse: Through the Eyes of NASA (Telescope Feed):

Watch a telescope feed of a total solar eclipse moving across North America on April 8, 2024, traveling through Mexico, across the United States from Texas to Maine, and exiting North America along Canada’s coast. Weather permitting, we will provide live views of the eclipse from several locations across the eclipse path, including showing the partially eclipsed Sun in different wavelengths of light.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and briefly covers the full disk of the Sun. This reveals the Sun’s wispy, white outer atmosphere, called the corona. Weather permitting, people throughout most of North and Central America, including all of the contiguous United States, will be able to view at least a partial solar eclipse. These telescope feeds are provided courtesy of our partners and collaborators. A full list of the telescope locations and providers is coming soon.

This is a livestream of the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse from Bloomington, IN USA, brought to you by the Luddy Scholars and the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering at Indiana University. This video will show the full solar disk in hydrogen-alpha (left) and white light (right), from the initial partial eclipse, 4 minutes of total eclipse, and the trailing partial eclipse. On the left, look for solar flares and prominences, as well as the silhouette of lunar mountains and craters. (You’ll see these as “ripples” and irregularities in the edge of the Moon as it moves past the Sun.) On the right, look for sunspots and the glorious solar corona (“crown”) during totality.
